NYC Pilates Training

Men and women who come to Pilates on Fifth come here for two distinct types of NYC Pilates training. The majority of them come to Pilates on Fifth as traditional clients, looking for a great workout on the Pilates equipment, in Pilates mat classes, or in our CARDIOLATES® or GYROTONIC® classes. The other type of client comes to Pilates on Fifth to study at the Pilates Academy International, the certification school which is headquartered at Pilates on Fifth.

These clients are certification students who hope to either start a career in Pilates teaching, or to refine and improve their existing teaching career. We're thrilled to welcome both types of students to the Academy. While we welcome both newcomers and "old hands," we do have tougher standards than most Pilates certification schools.

First, we ask that all of our certification students have a background teaching dance, fitness, or movement. Pilates is a very complex, demanding field of study; certification students have to begin at a certain level or they're liable to hold the rest of the class back. We also ask that certification students provide two letters of recommendation.

Our wish is to attract only those students who are serious about becoming Pilates teachers. Fitness is one of those fields that tends to attract students who aren't entirely sure what they want to do with their lives. Often, teaching dance or movement is just a brief stop along the way for people, rather than a true calling. While we certainly don't fault these types of teachers, we're interested in attracting more serious certification students, in order to produce more committed, knowledgeable, and gifted teachers.
